It is the largest tree in our garden, welcoming our guests. Even though they call it weeping willow, we believe it is in pretty a good mood, perhaps because of its surprising growth or perhaps because it makes happy whoever rests under its branches and enjoys the open space all around.

In the ancient hamlet of Turlago

On the border between Lunigiana and Garfagnana, the northern yet-unspoiled corner of Tuscany. Among medieval castles, breathtaking views across terraced olive groves and vineyards to dramatic mountains, in Turlago time and space follow the rhythm and lines of nature. We are 10 minutes drive up from the village of Fivizzano, away from tourist trail, nevertheless with easy access to the Ligurian coast of the Cinque Terre, the main art cities of Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Genoa and Parma, the trails across the National Parks of Alpi Apuane and Appennino Tosco-Emiliano with its ski resorts.

We are less than one hour drive from the beautiful coast of Golfo dei Poeti, the ancient cities of Lerici and Portovenere, celebrated in the memories of Byron, Shelley, Montesquieu, Wagner and Hemingway. Discovering the amazing scenery of the Cinque Terre and its colourful fishing villages, set amongst hillsteps of vineyards, olive groves, hidden coves and turquoise waters. In about one hour drive you can reach the lively coast of Versilia with the famous resorts of Viareggio, Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi, the endless sandy beaches, pine groves, trendy bars, restaurants and shops.

A wide network of pathways covers the territory of the two National Parks: the Parco delle Alpi Apuane and the Parco dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. There are official CAI (Italian Alpine Club) trails of all levels, mountain-biking paths through the Garfagnana, easy walks bordering meadows and lakes.
During winter season, several sport activities are offered: you can easily reach the ski resort of Cerreto Laghi with 25km of slopes (2 FISI black tracks), cross-country skiing routes, paths for Nordic Walking and snow rackets tours. Ski lessons for adults and children are available. At weekends an indoor ice rink is open to the public.

By car or train, you can easily reach the art cities of Parma, Carrara, Lucca, Pisa and Genoa, the lively town of Sarzana and Florence. The historic railway line Aulla-Lucca offers a spectacular itinerary through the Lunigiana and Garfagnana valleys, dotted with villages and medieval castles. Equi Terme is worth a visit: renowned for its healing waters, beautiful hamlet and grottos, every Christmas, it becomes the perfect scenery for one of the most picturesque living nativity.

Lunigiana was once described as the land of the 100 castles; among them are the castle of Verrucola near Fivizzano, the Piagnaro castle in Pontremoli, the Brunella fortress in Aulla and the Malaspina castle in Fosdinovo.

Local food specialties combine the long culinary tradition with the generosity of a land where quality products are grown over an almost virgin territory.
No wonder for the variety of niche products often labeled with the DOP mark (Protected Origin Denomination): the Lamb from Zeri, chestnut and acacia honeys, the Panigacci of Podenzana, cheese and salami such as Caciotta, Mortadella et Filetto della Lunigiana, Torta d’Erbi, Testaroli, mushrooms, the Bean from Bigliolo, the Onion from Treschietto, extra virgin olive oil, Rotella and Binotto apples, the Chestnut Flour of Lunigiana.
In Lunigiana eating out is definitely a treat: locally grown and freshly cooked food, all at a reasonable price. Many local restaurants offer "km zero" set menus with products exclusively coming from local farmers. Colourful festivals and markets take place from late May to November.

Every evening from the terrace of your apartment, surrounded by the silence of the valleys and by the mountains silhouettes, nature offers a unique spectacle of lights, colors and shapes.
In return, you just need to slow down, gaze and feel.
